This week I did a workshop at in the Bronx at The Point, a non-profit organization dedicated to youth development and the cultural and economic revitalization of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. Our discussion ranged from censorship to net neutrality and calcified the idea that we all suffer from a lack of imagination when it comes to building things for the local network. As such we brainstormed applications that could be useful for a Hunts Point Othernet installation. Here were some of our ideas:
- A message board for bartering and sharing local knowledge
- An offline arcade.
- A chat specifically to notify people at bus stops about the whereabouts of particular busses
- A crime map
- Police Spotter for a few DIY music venues.
Ultimately we plan on working closely with the Point to build out the infrastructure and technical capacity for a South Bronx Othernet.
